Connecting TomTom Go 720 to BlackBerry Curve 8320
Sep 13th
For 2 hours I have sat and fiddled with my damn BlackBerry and my TomTom Go 720 trying to get the data services to connect so I could view traffic and weather on my TomTom. I have to say the integration between these 2 devices is terrible. Plus TomTom supports only a very limited amount of smart phones, which I think is ABSOLUTELY W-E-T-W-A-R-D-E-D!
Wouldn’t it be in your best interest to support a plethora of smartphones these days?? I guess they don’t wanna work that hard over at TomTom keeping up on technology.
Anyway, what I wanted to post, other then my adolescent rant, is that I finally found the right combination of begging, the force, jedi mind tricks, threats, tweaks, crying, yelling and finally manual settings that will make these 2 devices play nice with each other, and allow all of us to use our TomTom 720s with our BlackBerry Curves 8320s..
Yippeee!
BTW – All credit for this find goes to Reverse over on the BlackBerryForums. This was posted on 12-17-2008, but as of today’s date, this absolutely worked on my devices.
I have linked to the original article, but in the event that I ever reset my device, or need to swap it for who-knows-what-reason, and the BlackBerryForums blows up one day losing all their forum posts, I will have it safety posted here. (isn’t that so smart of me…)
PS – I have edited the wordage just a little bit, so it doesn’t sound like a 12 year old posted it.. (Not implying the original poster was 12, and not saying that’s bad or anything… Ohhh jeesus, you know what I mean.. )
Here are the instructions I followed to get it working on T-Mobile (note: the Curve isn’t listed in list of devices, just set up manually)
on the BlackBerry:
Options –> Advanced Options –> TCP –> set APN to wap.voicestream.com
no username or password.
Save the settingson the TomTom 720:
Start the data wizard, select other for the Phone (the 8320 isn’t listed)
continue by doing a manual setup…
- APN: wap.voicestream.com
- Username: leave blank
- Password: leave blank
- Use the Auto IP(DHCP) & DNS settings.
- Dial: *99***1#
- Script/Connection string: AT+CGDCONT=1,”IP”,”wap.voicestream.com” (case and whitespace sensitive)
So after hours of probably scouring Google for this fix, here it is! Now you can cheer with glee and go drive around in your car with the knowledge that All your weather updates r belong 2 us.
Huzzahh!
